Barbados Cherry
🪴 Plant Care Guide
Barbados Cherry (Acerola, Malpighia emarginata) is one of the world's richest natural sources of Vitamin C — containing up to 65 times more Vitamin C per 100g than oranges. This compact tropical fruit shrub produces bright red cherries packed with antioxidants, making it both a beautiful ornamental garden plant and a highly nutritious superfood tree for UAE gardens.
A Superfood in Your Garden
The Barbados Cherry is prized worldwide for its extraordinary Vitamin C content. Acerola extract is used in health supplements, juices, and natural vitamin tablets. Growing your own tree means access to fresh, naturally-rich Vitamin C cherries throughout the year. The bright red, glossy cherries are also attractive ornamentally, making the Barbados Cherry a dual-purpose garden addition.
Culinary and Health Uses
Fresh cherries can be eaten straight from the tree, blended into juices and smoothies, made into jams, jellies, and chutneys, or dried and used as a natural supplement. The fruit has a tangy, slightly tart flavour and is known for immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
Growing Barbados Cherry in the UAE
The Barbados Cherry thrives in the UAE's warm tropical climate. It grows as a compact shrub or small tree (1–3m), making it suitable for garden beds, villa courtyards, and large pots on terraces. It is drought-tolerant once established and produces multiple fruiting cycles per year in UAE conditions.
Care Guide
Sunlight: Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for the best fruit production.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Barbados Cherry is drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogging.
Soil: Well-draining soil enriched with compost. Suitable for sandy UAE soils when amended with organic matter.
Fertilising: Apply balanced NPK fertiliser monthly during the growing season. Organic manure every 2 weeks encourages fruiting.
Pruning: Prune lightly after each fruiting cycle to encourage new growth and further fruiting. Remove dead wood and crossing branches.
An Ideal Gift Plant
The Barbados Cherry makes a wonderful and healthy gift — a living superfood plant that keeps giving. Perfect for health-conscious households, kitchen garden enthusiasts, and anyone passionate about growing their own nutritious food.
