Product reviews

Grow vibrant, nutritious Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) with Souq Garden's healthy plants. This earthy root vegetable is rich in iron, folate, and nitric oxide—a UAE winter favourite for juicing, salads, and Middle Eastern dips. Available across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

Why Beetroot Suits UAE Winter Gardens

Beetroot is a cool-season crop that produces sweet, tender roots when grown in UAE temperatures of 15-22°C between November and March. Sandy Emirati soils suit beets after compost amendment, and short maturity (55-70 days) allows two successions per winter.

Key Features and Specifications

  • Botanical name: Beta vulgaris
  • Family: Amaranthaceae
  • Maturity: 55-70 days from sowing
  • Root size: 5-8cm diameter, deep red
  • Plant spacing: 10cm × 25cm
  • Sowing depth: 1-2cm
  • Sun: Full sun to part shade
  • Variants available at Souq Garden

Care Guide

Sowing

Sow direct in October-February. Beet "seeds" are clusters; thin to one seedling per spot once true leaves emerge.

Soil

Loose, well-drained soil; pH 6.5-7.0. Amend UAE soils with sieved compost—avoid fresh manure to prevent forked roots.

Watering

Steady moisture is essential—1-2cm weekly. Drought causes woody, tough roots.

Feeding

Boron-rich soils prevent black heart. Side-dress with potassium-rich feed after thinning.

Harvest

Harvest when roots are 5-8cm diameter. Tender greens are also edible and nutritious.

Best Uses

  • Beetroot juice and smoothies
  • Roasted beetroot salad with goat cheese
  • Borscht (Eastern European beet soup)
  • Pickled beets and chutneys
  • Middle Eastern beet hummus and labneh

Common Problems and Solutions

  • Woody, tough roots: Inconsistent watering or over-mature roots—harvest on time and water steadily.
  • Black heart: Boron deficiency—apply borax solution.
  • Forked roots: Stony soil or fresh manure—sieve soil and use composted manure.
  • Leaf miners: Remove affected leaves; encourage parasitoid wasps.
  • Yellowing leaves: Iron or nitrogen deficiency—apply chelated iron.

📝 Description
Beetroot is essentially a cool weather crops, hence it grows best in winters in plains of india. Beetroot is rich in sugar and intense red in colour. High sugar content is accumulated under cool weather. High temperature for root growth result in poor colour development of the root. The optimum temperature for root growth is 18-21oc obtained always in cool climate and at a temperature below 10oc for couple of week‟s results in bolting which affects root development. Mild climatic conditions are suitable for beet growing under warmer conditions. Beet root shows alternate white and coloured circles when sliced. Excessive hot weather causes „zoning‟ – the appearance of alternating light and dark red concentric circles in the rot. It is a direct sown crop and can be harvested in 120-130days, whereas, transplanted crop comes to harvest in 135 to 150days.
