Product reviews

Buy Cape Leadwort (Plumbago auriculata) online in Dubai and UAE from Souq Garden. Loved for its clouds of soft sky-blue flowers, Plumbago is one of the more heat-tolerant flowering shrubs you can grow in the UAE — it keeps flowering into the warm months when many other flowers give up. It works beautifully as a low hedge, a tumbling border plant, or trained against a sunny wall in villa gardens across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates.

Why Plumbago suits UAE gardens

  • More heat-tolerant than most flowering shrubs — flowers well through the warm season
  • Drought and salt tolerant once established — good for coastal gardens
  • Fast-growing for quick hedges, screens and borders
  • Attracts butterflies and softens walls, fences and pot edges

Care guide for UAE

Comfort range: Performs best at roughly 18–38°C. Surviving peak summer: In the hottest months (40°C+), it needs your help — give it afternoon shade, water deeply in the early morning and evening, and it benefits from misting or foggers and a layer of mulch. With that effort it pulls through; left fully exposed in peak heat it will struggle. Light: Full sun in the cooler months for the most flowers. Water: Twice weekly until established, then weekly (more in summer heat). Soil: Any well-draining soil; improve sandy soil with compost. Feeding: A balanced fertiliser in spring and autumn — see our plant food & fertiliser range. Pruning: Trim after a flowering flush to keep it bushy. Mature size: 1–3 m, easily kept smaller.

FAQs

Can it handle UAE summer? It is among the better flowering shrubs for heat, but in peak summer it still needs afternoon shade, deep watering and ideally misting/foggers to look its best. Can it grow in pots? Yes, in a large pot on a sunny balcony or terrace. Is it good for hedging? Excellent — plant 60–80 cm apart for an informal flowering hedge.

📝 Description
In its native region from the cape province to natal, the leadwort grows up to 4 metres high and 6 metres wide under ideal conditions. An excellent shrub or climber in gulf regions, it seems to have adapted well to the growing conditions there. Owing to tiny glands, the foliage slightly adheres to the skin or clothes. The latin name auriculata refers to the ear shaped leaf base, and plumbago includes the latin word for lead because it allegedly healed lead poisoning. Flowers may appear for a very long time, but between june and september the cape leadwort is coated in sky blue. ‘Alba’ is a white flowering cultivar and ‘royal cape’ has intensely blue flowers. The campanulate inflorescences attract butterflies. Following pollination, seed capsules, develop retaining their adhesion to allow distribution by passing animals. In its natural habitat, this climber is associated with the cape honeysuckle (tecomaria capensis). Cape leadwort may be trained to cover a fence, or grow against a wall or along a trellis. It takes hard pruning and will even flower within the same year. Its limited size means that it can climb into trees without suffocating them. An interesting feature is the suckers that may allow the Cape leadwort to grow as a large scale aerial cover. It resists drought, and thrives in any type of soil. However, additional watering and high levels of humus and nutrients are welcome. Frost may cause foliage and slender twigs to die back, but plants quickly recover. Propagation may be carried out by cuttings, suckers and seeds.
