📝 Description
Throughout the world, the bird of paradise is known for its cut flowers. It is indigenous to the eastern cape, south africa, growing along rivers and close to the coast. Its stiff, upright leaves form dense clumps. They emerge from the base without any branching, creating a bouquet of exotic flowers on top of lush green foliage. Flowers stand above the leaves. A horizontal spathe resembles a bird’s head. Flowers are raised one by one from this sheath, consisting of three orange sepals and three dark blue petals each. Pollination is by birds. Strelitzias do not have many particular site requirements. With frequent irrigation, the plants thrive in full sun, but also produce flowers in partial shade. A rich soil with loam and compost is the most suitable, and occasional fertilising guarantees vital growth of healthy leaves and flowers. Hailing from coastal regions, they tolerate some salinity in the water applied, and withstand strong winds without damage. Low temperatures are tolerated as long as there are no frosts. They make a strong accent in sheltered gardens . Bird of paradise plants flourish in containers and look well as accent plants, either singly or grouped. The spectacular flowers should be accessible to enable pedestrians to take a closer look. Sowing in spring may result in flowering offspring within three to five years. Another method of propagation is division in autumn, which is usually combined with transplanting mature clumps.

The Giant White Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) is the ultimate statement plant for UAE villas, hotel lobbies, and large commercial spaces. With paddle-shaped leaves that can reach 2 metres in length and striking white-and-blue flowers at maturity, this is one of the few plants that actually looks better the longer it grows in Gulf conditions. Unlike its orange-flowered cousin Strelitzia reginae, Strelitzia nicolai tolerates lower light levels — making it ideal for UAE interiors with indirect window exposure.

Overview

Native to coastal subtropical South Africa, the Giant White Bird of Paradise is remarkably pre-adapted to UAE conditions. It evolved in a climate with hot summers, mild winters, and low humidity — similar to the Gulf. In its natural habitat it grows near the ocean where it receives constant wind, full sun, and sandy free-draining soil. In Dubai, it thrives when grown as a large indoor plant or in a sheltered outdoor courtyard that provides protection from peak summer wind.

Watering Guide for Dubai & UAE Climate

Dubai Summer (May–September): Water deeply once every 5–7 days. Allow the top 3–4 cm of soil to dry between waterings. In very hot periods (above 42°C outdoors), indoor specimens may need watering every 4 days if placed near south-facing windows where radiant heat is significant. UAE Winter (October–April): Reduce to once every 10–14 days. Strelitzia nicolai stores water in its thick roots and tolerates some drought — it is far more likely to be harmed by overwatering than underwatering in UAE conditions.

Light Requirements for UAE Conditions

Full sun to bright indirect light. In UAE outdoor courtyards, provide afternoon shade from May to September when temperatures exceed 40°C — intense midday sun on a south-facing wall can scorch the leaves even on this robust plant. Indoors, position near a south or west-facing window where it receives 4–6 hours of direct or very bright indirect light daily. It will tolerate lower light but growth will slow significantly and flowering will be unlikely.

Temperature & UAE Summer Survival

The Giant White Bird of Paradise is one of the toughest large plants for UAE gardens. It can survive outdoor temperatures up to 45°C with adequate watering but performs best at 18–32°C. As a potted indoor plant in UAE air-conditioned spaces (20–24°C), it grows steadily year-round. Keep away from AC vents that blow cold air directly onto the leaves — this causes brown tips that are cosmetically unsightly even if the plant survives.

Soil & Potting for UAE Gardens

Use a free-draining sandy loam mix. In UAE conditions where both native soil and municipal water have high salinity, it is important to flush the pot thoroughly when watering to prevent salt build-up at the roots. Repot every 2–3 years as this plant grows quickly and becomes root-bound. A root-bound Strelitzia nicolai is actually more likely to flower — UAE growers have found that mild pot stress encourages blooming.

Fertilising

Apply a slow-release granular fertiliser (NPK 14-14-14) in October and March. Supplement with a liquid balanced fertiliser monthly during the UAE winter growing season. Avoid heavy feeding in peak summer (June–August) when growth slows and salt from fertilisers accumulates more rapidly in the warm soil.
