📝 Description
Aurantiaca is a very unusual plant that offers very unique attractiveness. Purple passion plant, this plant has a velvety thick green leaf with deep purple hair spread all over them. All over this plant’s appearance gives an exclusive vibrant purple colour with a soft velvety texture. This purple passion plant (or Gynura aurantiaca) is widely grown for ornamental purposes in many homes or personal spaces. It’s recommended for those who are enthusiastic in house planters.

Gynura aurantiaca — the Purple Passion Vine — is one of the most visually distinctive houseplants you can grow in the UAE. Its soft, velvety purple hairs covering the deep-green serrated leaves create an almost iridescent purple glow in bright light, making it immediately striking in Dubai apartment interiors and UAE home gardens. It is also notably easy to grow in Gulf conditions, tolerating the bright indirect light that characterises most UAE living spaces far better than many purely tropical species.

Overview

Native to Java, Indonesia, Gynura belongs to the Asteraceae family. It grows as a spreading or vining plant depending on whether it is allowed to trail or is trained upward. In UAE conditions, it makes an excellent hanging basket plant for sheltered balconies or a cascading indoor plant near bright windows. Its small orange flowers are aromatic but most UAE growers prefer to pinch them off to preserve the compact velvety foliage that is the plant's real attraction — and to prevent the slightly unpleasant scent the flowers produce.

Watering Guide for Dubai & UAE Climate

Dubai Summer (May–September): Water every 5–7 days. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry between waterings. Gynura is susceptible to root rot if kept wet in warm weather — in Dubai's summer heat, waterlogged soil can turn anaerobic within 48 hours. UAE Winter (October–April): Reduce to every 8–12 days. Always water at the base of the plant, not overhead — water sitting in the leaf joints and on the velvety surface can cause fungal issues in UAE's humid transition seasons (November and March).

Light Requirements for UAE Conditions

Bright indirect light is ideal. Gynura needs adequate light to maintain its signature purple colouration — in low-light conditions the purple diminishes and the plant becomes more green. In UAE homes, a position 1 metre back from a south or east-facing window is ideal. Brief morning direct sun (7–9am) is tolerated and actually enhances the purple colour. Avoid intense UAE midday sun through glass, which will scorch the velvety leaves even if they look robust.

Temperature & UAE Compatibility

Gynura prefers 18–27°C and is well-suited to UAE air-conditioned environments. It handles the warm UAE winters (12–25°C at night) comfortably and can be placed on a shaded balcony year-round in most UAE emirates. Keep away from direct AC vents — the cold moving air causes tip burn on the velvety leaves. The plant is frost-tender (not relevant in UAE) but handles summer indoor temperatures in the 20–24°C AC range very well.

Soil, Humidity & Fertilising

Use a well-draining potting mix with added perlite (3:1 ratio). Moderate humidity of 40–60% is suitable — easily achievable in most UAE interiors without additional humidification. Fertilise monthly with a half-strength balanced liquid feed (NPK 20-20-20) during the UAE growing season (October–March). Hold back in peak summer. Pinch the growing tips regularly to keep the plant bushy rather than leggy — this is especially important in UAE where the year-round warmth encourages continuous fast growth.
