Product reviews
Kalanchoe is a captivating succulent plant that brings beauty and vibrancy to any space. Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, Kalanchoe includes over 200 species, making it both diverse and versatile. Its thick, fleshy leaves and stunning flowers have made it a popular choice among plant enthusiasts and interior decorators alike. One of the standout features of Kalanchoe is its ability to thrive in a variety of environments. Whether you're looking to add a touch of greenery to your home, office, or garden, Kalanchoe fits the bill perfectly. With numerous species available, you can select from a range of colors, sizes, and flower types, allowing you to customize your plant collection to suit your aesthetic preferences. Taking care of Kalanchoe is relatively easy, making it an ideal choice for both novice and experienced plant owners. This hardy succulent prefers well-draining soil to prevent root rot and thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. Originating from Madagascar, Kalanchoe is accustomed to arid environments, so it is crucial to allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is the most common mistake new plant owners make, so it's important to keep this in mind. Kalanchoe blooms beautifully, producing vibrant flowers in red, pink, orange, yellow, and white hues. These blooms typically appear in clusters and can last for several weeks, adding a pop of color to your living space. The flowering period varies depending on the specific species and growing conditions, but with the right care, you can enjoy their beauty throughout the year. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, Kalanchoe plants are known for their air-purifying qualities. They are effective at filtering toxins from the air, making your home a healthier place to be. This benefit, combined with their low maintenance requirements, makes Kalanchoe an excellent choice for anyone looking to improve indoor air quality. Kalanchoe can be used in various ways to enhance your interior design. Display them in decorative pots on your windowsill, coffee table, or shelf for a trendy look, or create a stunning arrangement with other succulents for a unique centerpiece. They also make thoughtful gifts for plant lovers or those who appreciate nature’s beauty. For outdoor enthusiasts, Kalanchoe can be planted in rock gardens, raised beds, or as part of a drought-tolerant landscape. Their resilience to harsh conditions makes them an excellent choice for gardeners looking for low-maintenance plants that still provide visual interest. Kalanchoe is also suitable for container gardening, allowing you to create portable displays that can be moved as needed. When propagating Kalanchoe, you have several options. Leaf and stem cuttings are the most common methods. Simply snip a healthy leaf or stem, allow it to callus for a few days, and then plant it in the soil. With proper care, you’ll see new roots developing, and soon enough, a new Kalanchoe plant will emerge. Another exciting aspect of Kalanchoe is its medicinal properties. Some species are used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments. They contain compounds that are believed to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. However, it's important to research and consult with a healthcare provider before using any plant for medicinal purposes. Kalanchoe is not only appealing to the eye but can also contribute to creating a calming environment in your home. The presence of plants has been shown to reduce stress and enhance mood, making Kalanchoe a valuable addition to your living space. Their lush green leaves and vibrant flowers can uplift your spirits and promote a sense of well-being. In summary, Kalanchoe is an outstanding choice for anyone looking to incorporate beauty, minimal maintenance, and air-purifying benefits into their home or garden. With its diverse range of species, vibrant blooms, and ease of care, Kalanchoe is a versatile and valuable plant that can enhance any environment. Embrace the charm and practicality of Kalanchoe, and enjoy the positive impact it can have on your space and your life.

Seasonal Care Calendar for the UAE

The UAE's climate divides into four distinct gardening windows. Each one calls for different watering, feeding, and placement choices for your Kalanchoe across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain, and Al Ain.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is the most active growth window in the UAE. Daytime temperatures sit between 25°C and 35°C, and humidity remains moderate. This is the right time to repot, prune, and start a regular feeding schedule using a balanced fertiliser from our plant food and fertiliser range. Move container plants from sheltered winter spots into morning sunlight, and water deeply two to three times a week.

Summer (June to September)

Summer in the UAE pushes temperatures above 45°C, and direct afternoon sun can scorch leaves within hours. Shift your Kalanchoe to filtered light, increase watering frequency (early morning and after sunset), and consider 50% shade netting on rooftop and balcony gardens in Dubai Marina, Al Reem Island, and Al Nahda. Mulch heavily to slow evaporation, and avoid heavy pruning until temperatures drop.

Autumn (October to November)

Autumn brings relief and a second growth flush. Resume monthly feeding, refresh topsoil, and inspect for pests that built up during summer. This is the best window to introduce new plants from our flowering outdoor plants collection because cooler nights help roots establish quickly.

Winter (December to February)

UAE winters are mild (15°C to 25°C) but dew, fog, and occasional rain affect Sharjah, Al Ain, and the Hajar Mountain foothills more than coastal Dubai. Reduce watering by roughly 40%, pause fertilising for tropical varieties, and move sensitive species closer to walls that radiate stored daytime warmth.

Landscape Design Ideas for UAE Gardens

Kalanchoe works beautifully in mixed UAE garden schemes. Pair with bougainvillea, hibiscus, and desert rose for a heat-tolerant tropical palette suited to Dubai villas and Al Ain courtyards. Plant in odd-numbered groupings (three, five, seven) for visual rhythm, and underplant with low-water ground covers to suppress weeds and conserve moisture.

For container displays on Sharjah balconies or Abu Dhabi rooftops, choose tall narrow planters from our pots collection and pair with trailing varieties from our flowering outdoor plants collection for vertical interest.

Encouraging More Blooms

Deadhead spent blooms weekly to redirect energy into new flower production. Feed every two to three weeks during the cooler months with a bloom-booster fertiliser high in phosphorus from our plant food range. Avoid wetting the petals when watering — UAE humidity combined with damp blooms encourages fungal spotting.

Common Problems and Solutions in UAE Conditions

Leaf Yellowing

Yellowing leaves on Kalanchoe most often signal overwatering or salt build-up from UAE tap water. Allow the top 3-5 cm of soil to dry between waterings, and flush containers monthly with a deep slow watering to wash out accumulated salts. Yellowing during winter usually indicates cold draft exposure or dormancy — normal and recoverable.

Brown Leaf Tips

Crispy brown tips point to low humidity, common in air-conditioned UAE homes during summer. Group plants together, use a pebble tray, or mist foliage with filtered water twice weekly. Avoid misting in the evening to prevent fungal issues.

Pest Pressure

Mealybugs, spider mites, scale, and whitefly all thrive in warm UAE conditions. Inspect weekly using a hand lens, and treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap from our pest and disease management collection. Quarantine affected plants for two weeks to prevent spread.

Sand and Dust Build-Up

Fine UAE desert dust coats leaves and reduces photosynthesis. Wipe broadleaf foliage monthly with a damp cloth, and rinse small-leaved plants under the shower or with a garden hose on a low setting. Clean leaves also discourage spider mite colonies.

Companion Plants and Garden Pairings

Pair Kalanchoe with plants that share similar light, water, and feeding needs for a balanced garden display. In UAE villa gardens, combine with drought-tolerant species from our outdoor plants collection such as bougainvillea, oleander, and lantana for low-maintenance colour. For balcony arrangements, mix with compact varieties from our indoor plants collection to create visual layers without overcrowding root systems.

Companion planting also supports pest control. Strongly scented herbs from our herbs collection — basil, mint, rosemary, and lemongrass — repel many common UAE pests when planted alongside ornamental and edible varieties. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kalanchoe suitable for first-time gardeners in the UAE?

Yes. With a basic care routine — appropriate watering, the right pot from our pots range, and seasonal feeding from our plant food collection — most beginners succeed within the first season.

How does Kalanchoe cope with UAE summer heat?

Provide afternoon shade, mulch the root zone, and water early morning and late evening. Container plants benefit from light-coloured pots that reflect rather than absorb heat.

Can I keep Kalanchoe indoors in a Dubai or Abu Dhabi apartment?

Many varieties adapt well to indoor conditions provided they receive adequate light. Place near a bright window away from direct AC airflow, and maintain humidity through grouping or a pebble tray.

How often should I fertilise Kalanchoe in UAE conditions?

Feed every three to four weeks during the cooler growing months (October through May), and reduce or pause feeding during peak summer. Use a balanced fertiliser from our plant food collection.

What is the best soil mix for Kalanchoe in the UAE?

A blend of quality potting soil, compost, and perlite (in roughly 2:1:1 ratio) provides drainage and nutrition. UAE garden soil often contains high mineral salts, so container growing with imported mix is preferred for sensitive species.

Does Souq Garden deliver across the UAE?

Yes. We deliver across all seven emirates — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain. Enjoy free delivery on orders above AED 200.

📝 Description
Kalanchoe is a genus of about 125 species of tropical, succulent flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae, mainly native to Madagascar and tropical Africa. Kalanchoe was one of the first plants to be sent into space, sent on a resupply to the Soviet Salyut 1 space station in 1971. Kalanchoes are characterized by opening their flowers by growing new cells on the inner surface of the petals to force them outwards, and on the outside of the petals to close them. Kalanchoe flowers are divided into 4 sections with 8 stamens. These plants are cultivated as ornamental houseplants and rock or succulent garden plants. Flowering Kalanchoes are available in red, pink, yellow, or white. Because they bloom in response to the length of daylight, they can be encouraged to bloom even during the darkest days of winter. Like many succulents, these are not difficult plants to grow, providing you are careful with the water, especially in the winter. They prefer bright, sunny locations, especially during the summer growing season. Water moderately throughout the summer and reduce watering in the winter. Let the soil surface dry out between waterings, and in the winter, the plant can almost dry out – they thrive in the low humidity of winter households. Watch the fleshy leaves for signs of water distress. They prefer warmth. Do not let fall below 13 C (55 F). An ordinary potting soil mix is fine. Feed bi-weekly in the summer with a liquid fertilizer, or use slow-release pellets.
