Yesterday Today and Tomorrow
Buy Yesterday Today and Tomorrow Plant in Dubai & UAE | Brunfelsia
The Yesterday Today and Tomorrow plant (Brunfelsia pauciflora) is one of the most enchanting flowering shrubs for UAE gardens and villa landscapes. Named for its extraordinary colour-changing flowers — blooms open deep violet-purple (yesterday), fade to lavender (today), then become white (tomorrow) — a single plant simultaneously displays all three colours, creating a constantly changing floral display that no other garden shrub can match. In the UAE's warm climate, this Brazilian native flowers prolifically from October through April during the Gulf's prime growing season.
Overview
Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, Brunfelsia pauciflora has proven remarkably well-adapted to Gulf conditions. Unlike many tropical flowering plants that struggle with the UAE's alkaline soil and hard water, Yesterday Today and Tomorrow tolerates these conditions well when given appropriate soil amendments. In Dubai and Sharjah villa gardens, it is commonly grown as a 1–2 metre flowering hedge or specimen shrub. In containers, it performs excellently on sheltered balconies and in covered courtyards.
Watering Guide for Dubai & UAE Climate
Dubai Summer (May–September): Water every 2–3 days in peak summer, or daily if potted and placed in a sunny position. Yesterday Today and Tomorrow is more moisture-hungry than many UAE garden shrubs but must have well-draining soil to prevent root rot. In ground planting, deep watering once every 3 days is preferable to shallow daily watering, which encourages surface roots vulnerable to heat stress. UAE Winter (October–April, the flowering season): Water every 4–5 days. During flowering, consistent moisture ensures the best bloom display — irregular watering causes premature bud drop, a common frustration for UAE growers.
Light Requirements in UAE Gardens
Full sun to partial shade. In UAE summer, provide afternoon shade (particularly from 1–4pm) when temperatures exceed 38°C, as sustained extreme heat can reduce flowering even on this heat-tolerant species. In the UAE winter growing season, full sun is ideal and produces the most prolific flowering. Potted specimens on east-facing balconies that receive morning sun and afternoon shade perform particularly well in the Dubai climate.
UAE Summer Survival Strategy
Yesterday Today and Tomorrow is moderately heat-tolerant but performs best when protected from the most extreme UAE summer conditions. In ground-planted specimens in Dubai and Sharjah: mulch heavily around the root zone in April to reduce soil temperature and water loss; avoid pruning in the heat of summer; and water in the early morning so foliage dries quickly. Container-grown specimens can be moved to a shaded, sheltered position during June–August. Most UAE gardeners find the plant recovers vigorously once September temperatures moderate.
Soil & UAE Growing Conditions
Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0). UAE's alkaline municipal water and native soils (often pH 7.5–8.5) can cause chlorosis (yellowing leaves from iron deficiency) over time. Combat this by: incorporating acidic potting mix when planting, adding sulphur chips to ground beds, using a chelated iron foliar spray every 6–8 weeks, and supplementing with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. These steps, standard practice for Dubai gardeners growing gardenias or azaleas, apply equally to Brunfelsia.
Fertilising
Apply a slow-release granular fertiliser for flowering shrubs in October (onset of the UAE flowering season) and again in February. Supplement with a phosphorus-rich liquid bloom booster (NPK 5-30-5) monthly during the flowering period to maximise bloom count and extend the display through April.
