A UAE favourite for good reason
Bougainvillea loves sun, tolerates heat and dry spells, and covers walls, fences and pergolas in bright colour. It is one of the most reliable climbers for UAE gardens.
Choosing a variety
Bougainvillea Glabra is a vigorous climber that comes in several colours, including purple, pink, orange and white. Bougainvillea Bushy has a fuller, more compact habit and suits borders and pots.
Planting
Choose a spot with full sun. Bougainvillea dislikes root disturbance, so handle the root ball gently and plant at the same depth as in the pot. Water well at first, then let the soil dry between waterings.
Pruning for more flowers
Prune lightly after each flush of flowers to keep the plant shaped and encourage new colourful growth. Wear thick gloves, as the stems carry thorns. A clean pair of Bypass Secateurs makes the work easier.
Less water, more colour
Too much water and fertilizer gives you leaves instead of flowers. Keep watering moderate once established.
