The most common mistake
Most struggling plants are either watered too little in the heat or too often in poorly draining soil. The goal is deep, less frequent watering that encourages strong roots.
Check before you water
Push a finger two to three centimetres into the soil. If it is dry at that depth, it is time to water. If it is still damp, wait.
Water deeply
Soak the root zone slowly so water reaches the full depth of the roots, rather than sprinkling the surface daily. Shallow watering leads to shallow roots that suffer in the heat.
Timing
Water early in the morning or in the evening. This reduces evaporation and keeps leaves from scorching.
Help soil hold moisture
Mulch the surface and use a quality potting mix for containers, such as Holland Torf Potting Soil. Always use pots with drainage holes.
Adjust with the seasons
Plants need far less water in the cooler months than in summer. Reduce frequency in winter, and watch the plant's leaves for signs of thirst or overwatering.
