How to Grow Herbs on a UAE Balcony

Fresh herbs, even in an apartment

A sunny balcony is all you need for a small herb garden. The cooler months from October to April are the best time to start, because herbs get established without the stress of peak summer heat.

Best herbs to start with

  • Holy Basil Tulsi: aromatic, easy in containers, and loved for tea and daily worship alike.
  • Curry Leaves: a small plant that gives fresh leaves for cooking all year once established.
  • Coriander: grown from seed in cooler months, ready to pick in a few weeks.

Pots, soil and sun

Use pots with drainage holes and a light, well-draining mix such as Holland Torf Potting Soil. Most herbs like four to six hours of sun, ideally in the morning, with some shade from harsh afternoon rays.

Watering

Water when the top of the soil feels dry, and avoid leaving pots standing in water. In the UAE climate, check pots more often than you would in a cooler country, especially on windy days.
